Bream a perennial favourite on Gold Coast

What a wet and windy week we’ve had on the Gold Coast, lucky our Houseboat customers have plenty of good anchorages around the Broadwater and Jumpinpin to hide out of the wind and make the most of their time on the water.  Let’s have a look at options after the rain.

Just as the Broadwater and Jumpinpin areas had started to recover and flourish with good bait schools showing up and quality fish being caught after all the rain from Cyclone Debbie and heavy falls mid-May we have been hit again by another dump of fresh into the system. Hinze Dam is overflowing and the Coomera weir is overflowing once again making the river and local area water conditions very average.

One species that will bite no matter how much fresh is in the system is the perennial favourite Bream. They seem to get quite active after a fresh flush chasing all the bait and goodies being flushed out of the rivers.  Our Houseboat customers who have tried some fishing have all managed a feed of Bream this week.

The water quality in the Coomera River is average, the main Broadwater and Jumpinpin area has copped a good dose of fresh water runoff.  Fishing the dirty water line where the fresh meets the salt on the run in tide near the Gold Coast Seaway main channel and also around the Jumpinpin Bar will be worth a go.  Most predatory fish will be heading toward the salty water combined with all the bait fish flushed out from the rivers should equal some nice Jewfish.

Reports of good catches of Prawns were coming in Monday before the rain around Russell, Karragarra and Macleay Island, it will be interesting to see in the rain has pushed them back up the rivers or if they are still schooling.

A few Mud Crabs are still on offer, it’s always worth dropping the pots in after rain.  Our customers scored a feed from the Mouth of the North arm of the Coomera and Mouth of the Pimpama on the edge of the main channel.  The Never Fail Islands, Canaipa and Cobby Passage also crabbed ok.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you any reports please let us know how you went.

At the time of writing my report the forecast is looking better for the weekend.  The wind direction will be moderate Southerly with a few showers on Saturday.  Sunday will see plenty of Sunshine with a bit of increase in wind strength.  The wind will ease by Tuesday and the rest of the week is looking ok.
