Whopper whiting on offer around Gold Coast

We’ve had a pretty nice weekend and start to the week on the Gold Coast with good fishing conditions before another South Easterly kicked in midweek. Let’s have a look at what’s been on offer if you’re keen to chase a feed for Good Friday and over Easter.

In last week’s report I mentioned that I fished with my kids in the Pirtek Fishing Challenge which is Australia’s biggest national fishing competition and we were waiting for the results to be posted on 24/3/18 https://pirtekfishingchallenge.com.au/  We had great news on Saturday morning with my daughter Rebecca winning 1st place in the Queensland Jr Whiting category with a whopper whiting that measured 44.1cm. Rebecca’s fish was the largest Whiting landed in the comp for Queensland even in the adult division which was a great surprise for us. Unfortunately her sister Jess just missed out on 2nd with a fantastic 42.2cm Whiting and I missed out by 1mm on third place with my 42.2cm Whiting. We had some fantastic fishing with 8 Whiting over 40cm, Rebecca also landed a 43.5cm fish during the afternoon. It was a great memorable day of fishing with new personal best for all of us. We can’t wait for next year.

Houseboat customers found some schools of Tailor around the Pin Bar mouth, Tiger Mullet Channel and up Canaipa Passage this week on the run in tide.   Best baits were whole WA pilchards, White Pilchards and strips of Mullet Fillet. Towing Hard body lures is a good option & help to cover as much ground as possible to locate schools of Tailor.  Once located, throwing metal slugs and surface walkers are a great way to get them chewing.

Customers fishing in the Coomera River on the weekend reported some nice Whiting being caught, biggest reported going 41.5cm with plenty of good eating size fish around the 27 to 30cm mark. There was no shortage of Bream around stealing the bait before the Whiting had a chance.  Fishing can be slow during the tide change but once the water starts to run the fish were biting regularly. If your targeting Whiting make sure you have a long leader up to 1 m long of 6lb fluorocarbon, size 6 bait holder hook and either 4 – 5 ball sinker depending on the water depth and tide to keep the bait in the strike zone. If your sinker is too light, you will catch Bream over Whiting. Worms or yabbies are the bait of choice.

Our Houseboat customers have managed a feed of Mud Crabs and a few Sand Crabs this week, some of the better spots were Tiger Mullet Channel both eastern end near the feeder creek on Crusoe Island and western end feeder creeks near the Kangaroo Island reserve sign. Also Eden Island, Cobby Passage, Kouryabba, Logan River, Cabbage Tree Point, Jacobs Well, Never Fails, Coomera River both north and south arms.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.

Seabreeze is a great website to access a local forecast http://www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/

At the time of writing my report the forecast looks like we will see Moderate SE winds over the Easter weekend and a few showers. The winds should ease off Monday which will be nice.  Just keep in mind the waterways and boat ramps will be extra busy over Easter so just take care and bring your patience.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au    Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
