Sheltered Gold Coast Rivers the Best Bet

We’ve seen another mixed bag of weather on the Gold Coast this week, the strong Southerly wind eased towards the end of the week but will be back for the weekend at this stage. Finding a spot out of the wind for the next few days will be important if you want to go fishing. Given the strong South/South Easterly change due to hit the Gold Coast Friday afternoon the sheltered rivers and anchorages along Stradbroke Island will be the best options. I would not recommend fishing too close to the Gold Coast Seaway or the Jumpinpin Bar to avoid the swell pushing through.

Our regular customers and Houseboat hirers have found a nice feed of Mud Crabs this week, some spots to try out of the wind are the Coomera River both North & South Arms, Pimpama River, Logan River, Tiger Mullet Channel, Cobby Passage, Tipplers Passage, Brown Island and Paradise Point. Just remember Fisheries officers are out and about to make sure your following the rules https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/rules-regulations/crabs-and-lobsters

Whole mullet are great bait and you can also try fresh chicken carcasses, I recommend using a bait bag & clip to stop the little fish and Eels stealing you bait. The Rivers and calm anchorages in the Broadwater and Jumpinpin should produce a good feed of Whiting, Bream and Flathead. Try fishing around the sandbanks, creek mouths and drop offs with yabbies, prawns, white pilchards, mullet fillet and worms. Some good spots out of the wind are Tiger Mullet Channel, Coomera River, Pimpama River, North side of Woogoompah Island, Coby Passage, Logan River, Nerang River, North side of Eden Island and Paradise Point. Land based the Coomera River has a few options along with Paradise Point and the Logan River out of the Southerly.

If you don’t feel like fishing in the wind your welcome to come in for a chat and stock up the Tackle Box ready for the next trip. Once the swell settles down later next week it will be worth a look around the ocean entrances for a nice Squire, Bream, Jewfish or Trevally. The swell and waves stir up the feed in the Seaway and Pin bars which attracts some quality fish. At the time of writing my report it looks like we will see a strong Southerly change push through late Friday night and hand around all weekend and into the working week. We also have a massive swell on the way so fishing in the estuary’s and rivers and calm waters would be recommended.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au Good luck with the Fishing.
