Mud Crabs Moving Around Coomera

It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying Australia Day on the water, we had all our Houseboats out having fun and catching some nice Fish and Crabs.  Let’s have a look at what’s biting on the Gold Coast.

Customers have reported some quality Mud Crabs being caught in good numbers during the week. With a bit of rain on the way it will be worth the effort to get the pots out and take advantage of the extra fresh water in the system that will give the Mud Crabs a well needed flush out.  Some spots that produced are Tiger Mullet Channel, Cobby Passage, Canaipa Passage, Logan River, Eden Island, Jacobs Well, The Never Fail Islands and the Coomera River.  Whole Mullet are great bait and also gives you a chance of catching of a Sand Crab, just make sure you are up to date with all the rules on Crabbing   https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/rules-regulations/crabs-and-lobsters

Mangrove Jack have been active this week with reports of quality fish being caught on lures and bait. Customers have caught some nice fish in the North Arm of the Coomera River at Bullock head creek, Jewel creek, the rock walls at Sanctuary Cove and around the Santa Barbara boat ramp.  Other good spots to try are Sovereign Island, Ephraim Island, Local Canal Pontoons and Bridges, Marina Mirage and Nerang River.

While targeting Mangrove Jack we have seen some good size Estuary Cod and Trevally who like to frequent the same areas.  Best baits are live Mullet or Herring, for the lure fishermen both soft plastics and hard body’s work well depending of the areas you are targeting.

Good numbers of solid Whiting have been caught this week throughout the Broadwater, Jumpinpin and Rivers.  Worms and Yabbies are great bait, some spots may fish better during the night than day time. Tidal flow is important to stir the feed up and attract the Whiting, during a change of tide the bite can slow down.  Some good spots are the Coomera River, Paradise Point, Wave Break Island, Tipplers Passage, Jacobs Well Shoals, Bedrooms, Gold Bank, Green Bank, Tiger Mullet Channel, Canaipa Passage and the Logan River.

At the time of writing my report it looks like we will see strong N/NW winds and rain this weekend. We have some good options on the Gold Coast to hide out of the wind.  By Monday the wind and rain should have passed giving us some nicer conditions for fishing. If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au    Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
