Large numbers of mud crabs on Gold Coast

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you all had a good break and managed to get out for a fish or a crab. We have had a mixed bag of weather to start the New Year with extreme heat, rain and SE blow all in the same week on the Gold Coast.  Let’s have a look at what been happening.

After some much needed rain this week giving the creeks a bit of a flush out good numbers of Mud Crabs have been showing up.  Getting the pots in the water the first day after the rain is normally the best time to chase a feed.  Some good spots that produced a feed are the Coomera River both North and South Arms, Pimpama River, Jewel Creek, Wasp Creek, Brown Islands, The Never Fail Islands, Jacobs Well, Kangaroo Island, Eden Island and Canaipa Passage.  Just keep in mind the Logan River is off limits to Crabbing at the moment.  Be aware a few pots have been raided and stolen lately so keep an eye on your pots, it’s a good idea to plan to have a fish in the area while your pots are soaking.  Whole Mullet or fish frames will make great bait.

Our Houseboat customers have been catching a good mixed bag of Bream, Whiting and Flathead throughout Tipplers Passage, Dux, Tiger Mullet Channel, Canaipa Passage, Jacobs Well, Coomera River and Pimpama River.  Good baits to try are Prawns, Worms, Yabbies, White Pilchards and Mullet Fillet cut into strip baits.

Reports of some quality Mangrove Jack have been coming in this week, the SE change didn’t seem to affect the bite to much with some nice fish landed.  The Coomera River holds some top quality fish, try the Highway Bridge, Regatta Waters boat ramp and rock bar, Railway Bridge for those with boat access.  Also next to our shop at the end of Shipper Drive, Santa Barbara boat ramp, Coomera Waters boats ramp and jetty or the Hope Island Bridges are all worth a go. Other good spots are Sovereign Island, bridges at Paradise Point, Runaway Bay canals and the Nerang River pontoons and rock walls. Live baits like Mullet, Herring or Pike are great.  Also throwing a mixture of Zman plastics and Zerek hard body lures have been working a treat.

Seabreeze is a great website to access a local forecast http://www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/

At the time of writing my report the SE will drop off Friday before kicking back into gear on Saturday and easing a bit on Sunday. Monday and Tuesday are the pick of the days with light Easterly winds and a drop in swell giving everyone a fish fishing options to explore. Take care on the water as there is a lot more traffic than normal be safe and enjoy your holidays.
