Jewfish and flathead very active on Gold Coast

crabs activeHi Everyone, we’ve had a pretty nice week on the Gold Coast, a bit of rain last weekend was  good for the river systems stirring the bait fish up and even getting a few good late season Mud Crabs. Some of our Houseboat customers scored a nice feed of crabs in the Coomera River.  Let’s have a look at some options for the next week.

Flathead seem to be quite active at the moment with the cooler water and good schools of bait to feed on. Brad Smith Fishing Charters have been finding their customers plenty of nice Flathead in the Nerang River and also the Tweed River this week working Vibe lures. Trolling small hard body lures is a great way to locate fish as you can cover plenty of ground especially at high tide on the top of sandbanks until you can find better numbers of fish. Once you locate the Flathead you may like to throw soft plastics around that 3 to 4 inch size range rigged on 1/4 or 3/8 jig heads. Targeting the edges of sandbanks and drop offs as the tide runs out is usually quite successful throughout the Jumpinpin and Broadwater area. A few spots to try are Marine Stadium, Paradise Point, Currigee, Aldershots, Jacobs Well, Eden Island, Mouth of the Logan River and Cobby Passage.

Jewfish have been active this week. The colder June nights have certainly switched on the bite.  The Pin Bar mouth and Gold Coast Seaway have both been very productive, as we see more Mullet and Tailor schools move in the average size of fish should start to get bigger.  Live bait like Mullet, Pike, Herring or Tailor is a great option. Also try large Zman Plastics or Zerek Fish Trap Vibes worked on the last 2 hours of the rising tide and the first hour of the run out.  Look for bait schools on the sounder and listen out for top water activity as the larger jewfish will smash bait fish on the surface at night.

Will Henderson has been getting stuck into some nice reef fish off Tweed Heads lately, a good variety of species has been active including Jew Fish, Mauri Cod, Moses Perch, Tusk Fish, Snapper and a few Cobia. The early morning bite has been the best time and float lining WA pilchards, Squid and live Yakka’s has worked well for Will.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any great catches or photos you would like to share, please email us and let us know how you went.

Seabreeze is a great website to access a local forecast http://www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/

At the time of writing my report the forecast looks like we will see a good weekend on the way. Friday will see light S/SW winds tending light W/SW on Saturday. Sunday will see more moderate W/SW winds making Saturday the pick of the days to get out and about. The new moon on Thursday will see some bigger tides in the system. Just make sure you have the latest weather report before you head out on the water.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au    Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
