Great Catches of Mud Crabs on Gold Coast

IT seems to be either drought or torrential rain on the Gold Coast, last weekend we saw the heavens open up with rain and wind dominating the forecast.

There are some benefits to so much rain, it gets the mud crabs on the move, gives the rivers a good flush and pushes the bait into the main systems. From Sunday onwards the sunshine was back and lighter winds for the rest of the week was a welcome change.

Customers that managed to get the pots out early Sunday scored some great catches of mud crabs after all the fresh water flush out. Some quality full crabs during June are a welcome addition to the dinner table. Our Houseboat crews have also done well during the week, try the Coomera River, Pimpama River, Logan River, Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Brown Island, Tipplers Passage and the Never Fail Islands. Whole mullet and fresh fish frames are the best bait.

The water quality in the Coomera River is slowly getting better, the main Broadwater is also improving after the large amount of fresh water runoff. Fishing the dirty water line where the fresh meets the salt on the run in tide near the Gold Coast Seaway main channel and also around the Jumpinpin Bar will be worth a go. Most predator fish will be heading toward the salty water combined with all the bait fish flushed out from the rivers should equal some nice jewfish, trevally and tailor being caught around these areas.

I have seen some big bream being caught around Lands End at Biggera Waters this week, they will dominate the catch as bream respond well to a flush out and feed hard combined with the drop in water temp. Some other good spots to try are Paradise Point, Runaway Bay, Labrador, Gold Coast Seaway, Tiger Mullet Channel, Crusoe Island, Short Island, Marks Rocks in the Logan, Cobby Passage and Wave Break Island for a feed. Mullet fillet, mullet gut, white pilchards, prawns and yabbies are great bait. Don’t forget to use burly to get them on the chew, Wilson fishing burley pellets work well.

Some rivers have fished better than others depending on the amount of fresh in that system, some nice Whiting and Flathead have been caught during the week.

Offshore fishing looks like an option for Friday and Saturday at this stage, the local reefs should fish well after the big swell stirred up the feed. A good mixed bag of Snapper, Moses, Tusk Fish, Cod, Trag, Jewfish, Cobia and Spangled Emperor should make up most of the catch. Just check your local forecast before heading out.

At the time of writing my report it looks like great the conditions will be shot lived, Friday and Saturday are the pick on the days with light SW winds and small swell, by Sunday the Southerly wind will increase bringing more rain and another big swell for the remainder of the week.
