Gold Coast Fishing in September: flathead, tailor, whiting

FATHER’S Day saw nice weather on the Gold Coast making hitting the water on Sunday a great option, during the week we had 10-15 knots of E/SE wind giving you plenty of spots to try your luck land based or from the boat in the Broadwater or the Pin.

A few tailor showed up again this week around the Pin Bar entrance on the incoming tide, keep a look out for the birds working the schools of fish actively feeding. Once you locate the fish try throwing metal slugs, surface poppers, troll hard body lures or drift Whole WA pilchards will also do the job to entice a bite. Beach fishing has also produced a few fish, try Narrow Neck, Main Beach, Marina Mirage, Seaworld, Pumping jetty or South Stradbroke Island around the Bedrooms or Currigee are worth looking at. Best bait is whole WA Pilchards, Mullet Fillet or Bonito Fillet all work.

Customers have done well finding some nice flathead this week, drifting live yabbies, pike, herring, white pilchards or whole WA pilchards to cover ground and find the fish has been productive for the bait fishos. Snot weed is still an issue in some areas making trolling hard body lures a bit tedious at times, throwing Z-man soft plastics, Zerek Fish Traps or working TT Switchblades and are all doing the job depending on the area, depth of water and bottom you are fishing. Some good spots this week are the Gold Coast Seaway rock walls, Currigee, Crab Island Middle Banks, Brown Island, The Never Fail Islands, Curtis, Tiger Mullet Channel, Crusoe Island, Kalinga Bank, Pin Bar Entrance, Bedrooms, Canaipa Passage and the Logan River Mouth.

Reports of good whiting showing up is a great sign as we head into the summer season, some very healthy nice sized fish are being caught in reasonable numbers at the moment. Worms and yabbies are the go to bait to temp a bite, whiting are a fantastic table fish to target. I recommend to use a long 6lb fluro carbon leader up to 1m, size 6 bait holder hook and a 4 ball sinker, just let the fish bite for along as possible if you try and strike you will just pull the bait out of it’s mouth and miss the fish. Customers have found a feed in the Logan River, Jacobs Well, Tiger Mullet Channel, North Bedrooms, Coomera River both arms, Paradise Point, Wave Break Island and the Surf Beach gutters are also fishing well.

Our Houseboat customers have done well catching some nice mud crabs this week, also sand crabs have been on the menu. Tiger Mullet Channel, The Never Fail Islands, Dux, Tipplers Passage, Curtis, Canaipa Passage, Jacobs Well, Brown Island and the Coomera River are worth dropping the pots while you go for a fish. Whole mullet are the best option if there is a mixture of mud and sand crabs on the chew.

At the time of writing my report we will see the wind blow a bit from the North on Friday and Saturday before easing and tending light Southerly making Sunday the best day to get out for a fish.
