fish crabs still gold coast

Fish and crabs still on offer on Gold Coast

The May Day long weekend on the Gold Coast was a bit of a windy and wet weekend at times. We did see the wind ease a bit on Monday but some showers moved in for the start of the week. Customers still had a good break and managed to catch some nice fish and crabs.

The Coomera River is holding good schools of bait fish mostly herring at the moment and large numbers of mullet are on the move on the run out tide. Tailor schools have been quite active in the late afternoons seeing plenty of good size fish fall victim to a combination of surface lures and metal slugs worked around the schools of feeding fish in the upper reaches of the river. I was throwing around a hard body lure land based on Monday and landed a Estuary Cod and also dropped a nice size GT that spat the lure at my feet. As the water cools more predators will be on the move chasing bait fish.

Mat sent us a photo during the week of a nice Bull Shark he landed last weekend in the Coomera River after reading our report. Thanks for sending us your photo and congratulations on landing a quality shark. Photo used in this week’s report

We are now stocking fresh water eel which is my favourite Bull Shark bait, there are plenty of Sharks still active in the Coomera River and defiantly worth a go if you’re keen to land one.

Customers reported a strong current running offshore late last week making bottom fishing pretty hard going on the close reefs. Some good shows of fish were around but getting a bait to them was not easy. Customers ended up scoring a few Snapper and Moses, hopefully as the air and water temp starts to drop so will the current and the reef fishing will improve.

Customers have been finding some good early season Bream around Short Island, Tiger Mullet Channel, Logan River, Jacobs Well, Tipplers Passage, The Coomera River, Paradise Point and the Gold Coast Seaway. Mullet Fillet, White Pilchards, Mullet Gut and Yabbies are great bait. A good burly trail is important when chasing Bream, we stock a couple of great pellet options from Wilson Fishing and Stimulate. As we head into winter, all the early signs for a great Bream season is good news for anglers.

With the water clarity pretty good at the moment we have seen plenty of Sand Crabs being caught by our houseboat customers, some good spots have been Tiger Mullet Channel, Pandanus Island, Whalleys Gutter, The Never Fails Islands, Currigee and the western side of Wave Break Island.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.
