Coomera River Producing the Goods

Considering the forecast we had the weather this week turned out to be quite good. The big tides as we lead up to the full moon this Friday have made fishing a bit tougher than normal. Anglers who put in the time and effort were rewarded with a few fish and crabs.

With the big rise and fall in the tide over the Anzac Long Weekend fishing the last 2 hours of the run out and the first 2 hours of the run tide in including the change will increase your chances of landing a few nice fish.

Customers reported the number of quality crabs being caught this week are a bit few and far between. While large numbers of small and female crabs are being caught not many keepers are showing up. Hopefully the Full Moon on Friday will help flush out the creeks combined with a bit of rain on the forecast for early next week might do the trick. In most areas even the upper reaches of the rivers Sand Crabs have been out numbering Mud Crabs this week.  Make sure your up to date with all the rules if you are setting the crab pots

In the Coomera river customers have been catching some nice Moses Perch, Mangrove Jack, Trevally and Estuary Cod on metal vibes, plastics, hard body lures and live baits. Whilst a lot of Moses are undersized we have seen a few that have been over the size limit of 25cm they have a bag limit of 5 fish per person.  Bridges, boat ramps, rock walls, fallen trees and jetty’s are all good spots to fish proving good hiding spot for these predators.

A few nice Flathead have been caught this week around The Bedrooms, Tipplers Passage, Crab Island, Wave Break Island, Brown Island, Jacobs Well, Tiger Mullet Channel, Logan River and the Coomera River.  They are a great fish for the kids to target, you can drift either live or dead bait. When at anchor the little ones like to wind in and cast out a lot which defiantly attracts the Flathead to strike.  You can also troll hard body lures, work blades, Zerek fish trap vibes or flick soft plastics like the Zman Range 3 and 4 inch minnow or curl tale.

Banana Prawns have also been a bit hit and miss, the best areas to look are from Jacobs Well north to Russell Island, including Cabbage Tree Point, Canaipa Passage and the Power Lines for a feed.  Just keep an eye out for boats casting nets.

At the time of writing my report it looks like we will see strong Southerly winds on Saturday tending South Easterly Sunday and hanging around for the long weekend.  We may also see some rain for the start of the week.   Just remember the water ways and boat ramps will be busy during the Anzac Long weekend, a bit of extra patience and courtesy to your fellow boaties may be required.
