It seems like this year has flown by quickly with this Friday being the first of December already. The summer weather pattern has kicked in with humid weather, showers and rain hanging around this week. Good news for anglers chasing pelagic species with the first wave of little Black Marlin off the Gold Coast. Plus plenty of Dolphin fish on offer. Big whiting are also about.
Offshore
Great news for game fisherman off the Gold Coast this week with the first wave of Little Black Marlin showing up in good numbers. Hopefully this sets the scene for a great pelagic season. Reports of Black Marlin being hooked from reefs around the Jumpinpin, try Sullies, Cottons, Cathedrals and trolling between the 40 to 50m depth ranges. Off the Gold Coast Seaway our local reefs and bait grounds will all see action. Troll the 18 and 24 fathom reefs and reefs NE of the Seaway.
Best advice is to keep an eye on the sky for birds feeding or on the wing tracking Billfish. I do prefer to troll skirted lures like small Pakula range to cover ground and make finding fish much easier when chasing black marlin. Once you locate the fish, work the area and you should do well. Little Black Marlin are a buzz to catch with their aerial display and power on light tackle. I prefer to chase them on 8kg tackle. By catch is always on the cards including Dolphin Fish, Wahoo, Tuna and Mackerel. With the summer weather pattern also comes storms and larger swells, just make sure you have the latest weather report before heading offshore.
Inshore
Whiting have been on the chew this week, reports of good catches have come in from the sandbanks around Wave Break Island, Crab island, Paradise Point, Coomera River North and South Arms, Bedrooms, Green and Gold Bank, Jacobs Well, Nerang and Logan River. Fishing light is the key. I use 6-8lb main line attached to an extra-long 6lb fluro carbon trace matched with a 4ball sinker to keep your bait in the bite zone and a size 6 bait holder hook when I am using worms. Yabbies will also work well. I recommend using a Mustad or VMC long bait holder size 4 for better bait presentation. Finding the fish feeding is the key, don’t stay in one area too long, and keep on the move until you start to consistently catch fish.
The Broadwater has been fishing well with some good sized Tailor, GT, Big Eye and Sliver Trevs on offer. Find the birds, find the bait and the fish will be close by. I have been getting good results using 1/2 ounce TT Switch Blades, Metal Slugs and Trolling hard body lures up to 100mm long.
Crabs
With the rain hanging around it’s a good idea to get the Crab Pots in. There will be some good Mud Crabs on the move and Sand Crabs are around in good numbers as well.

At the time of writing my report we will see moderate to stronger at times N/NE winds, a few showers of rain and a rising swell. We have plenty of options to find a good spot to fish out of the wind. Make sure you have the most up to date forecast before heading out on the water.
