Tips for Flathead on Gold Coast (Plus Bream, Tailor & Queenfish)

WE were blessed by the weather Gods on the Gold Coast again last weekend making a great run of fine weather and light winds two weekends in a row.

Not a bad week either with light to moderate winds and some cloud cover, conditions were fine to get out and about on the water.

Customer Allex had some luck over the weekend landing a quality flathead, well done.

We have seen good numbers of flathead being caught throughout the Broadwater and Jumpinpin area the past few weeks.  The key is to find were the fish are and more than likely you will land multiple schooling fish within a small area.  Best areas to look are river mouths on the run out tide, junctions in channels and river systems, creek mouths and the edges and tops of sandbanks and rock walls. Some good spots to look are the Coomera River, Wave Break Island, Crab Island Middle Bank, Brown Island, The Never Fails, Jacobs Well, Tiger Mullet Channel, Canapia Passage, Kalinga Bank and the Logan River.  Just mix up your methods depending on tide and water depth, soft plastics, vibes, blades and baits will all work depending on your preference.

Reports of nice bream keep coming in this week, Jumpinpin has been fishing well around Crusoe Island, Short Island, Eden Island, Tiger Mullet Channel, Whalleys Gutter and Jacobs Well.  The Logan River, Coomera River, Wave Break Island and the Gold Coast Seaway are also producing fish.  Best baits are Mullet Gut, Mullet Fillet, Prawns, White Pilchards, WA Pilchard pieces and Yabbies.

Schools of tailor were a bit quiet over the weekend but started to make an appearance again during the week on the last of the run in tide around the Pin Bar and Gold Coast Seaway.  I did see a few schools of small queenfish around the pin bar over the weekend.  Target the tailor schools by throwing metal slugs, surface poppers and walkers into the feeding schools, trolling hard body lures to locate the fish or drift WA Pilchards rigged on ganged hooks are also great methods.

For the off shore fisherman we will see nicer conditions by early next week, the weekend forecast is not looking the best for venturing out to sea.

Coomera Houseboat Holidays/Coomera Bait & Tackle now have Hire Tinnies.  Seabreeze is a great website to access a local forecast.

At the time of writing my report we will see the wind swing S/SE and increase between 15-20+ knots by Saturday and some rain moving in. By Monday the winds will ease and tend N/NW light to moderate and the sunshine return to the Gold Coast. Might have to look for a spot out of the wind to try you luck on the weekend.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au    Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
