Fresh Flush Makes the Smaller Fish Active on Gold Coast

Just as it looked like the Rivers, Broadwater and Jumpinpin had started to recover after the big low pressure system dumped a large amount of rain 2 weeks ago we received another 60+mm on Sunday adding more fresh water into local waters. Its great news for the Gold Coast in the coming months, you just had to look a bit harder this week to find the fish. Let’s have a look at a few School Holiday fishing options.

I headed out for a look on Tuesday, the water was quite dirty and large amount of fresh water was moving through the Broadwater and joining rivers. I managed to put together a feed of Whiting up to 35cm and Bream in the low 30cm range on beach worms. The fresh flush makes a lot of small fish quite active along with lots of vermin like toad fish and cat fish, still it’s nice to spend a few hours on the water catching a feed. I even managed a nice 60cm Jew to release on 6lb Whiting gear that was fun to catch. By the weekend the rivers should start to fish better, head towards the mouth on the rising tide for the best water quality. Try the Coomera River, Pimpama, and Logan River for a feed.

Reports of good sized Bream have dominated this week, Bream are a great option for the kids to learn to how fish these school holidays. Get the kids out of the house, give the computer games a break and introduce them to fishing. The idea is to keep it basic and get the kids involved as much as possible. Catching bait is fun for little ones, show them how to pump yabbies, catch beach worms or collect soldier crabs, they will have a ball.

A cheap kids fishing combo will do the trick, It does not matter how big or small the fish is they catch it’s all about fun, if the fishing is a bit slow give them a break as you don’t want them getting bored. It’s fantastic to see them smile when they catch a fish. Bream, Whiting and Flathead can be caught from the shore or in a boat, some good land based spots to try are Paradise Point, Hope Island, Coomera River Bridge, Marine Stadium, Grand Hotel Jetty, Runaway Bay Foreshore, Biggera Waters and Labrador. In the boat Short Island, Crusoe Island, Tiger Mullet Channel, Logan River, Jacobs Well, Wave Break Island and The Gold Coast Seaway are producing quality Bream. Prawns, White Pilchards, Mullet Gut, Mullet Fillet, Worms or Yabbies will work well.

Customers reported some nice Tailor starting to show up last week before the rain, it’s worth having a look around the Gold Coast Seaway and Jumpinpin Bar of the last 2 hours of the run in tide as the water should be looking better. Keep a look out for bird activity and fish busting the surface, casting metal slugs, trolling hard body lures or drifting whole WA pilchards will work depending on your preferred method.

Offshore fishing last Saturday produced a few nice Snapper and a mixed bag of reef species from the local 18 & 24 fathom reefs east of the Seaway, Surfers and Casino. Sunday is looking ok to head off shore at this stage, always check the local forecast and conditions before heading out to sea. Whole WA pilchards, large Squid, Mullet Fillet, Bonito Fillet and live Yakka’s are the best baits.

At the time of writing my report it looks like we will see stronger Westerly winds on Friday before tending SW on Saturday and easing off by Sunday. We should see plenty of sunshine on the way and Sunday looks like the best day to get out and about.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au Good luck with the Fishing. Brett
