A feed of fish and crabs on offer around Coomera

As summer officially kicks off and school holidays start on the Gold Coast let’s have a look at all the summer species options and what’s been happening on the water this week. With hot a dry conditions still hanging around the Houseboat Customers are having a great time exploring the Broadwater and Jumpinpin regions catching a feed of fish and crabs.

School Holidays start today, if you’re looking for a great fun activity why not get the kids out of the house and check out a few local fishing spots. Keep it simple and get the kids involved as much as possible. Show them how to tie on their hooks, swivels and bait the hook. Catching bait is great fun, the kids love pumping yabbies, digging pippies or chasing soldier crabs around the beach. Frozen Prawns, Squid and Worms are a good choice. Bread works well on the local Bream population, it’s clean and very affective bait especially for the younger kids.

A basic cheap kid’s combo we stock in our tackle shop Coomera Bait and Tackle like Wilson Hassle Free outfit will do the trick. Make it as much fun as possible, and give them a big high 5 no matter how big or small the fish is they catch. If you have younger kids choose a spot that has toilets and a playground nearby like Paradise Point Jetty. It’s rewarding to see a big smile on their face when they catch a fish. Chasing estuary species like Bream, Whiting and Flathead which can be caught from the shore or in a boat is a good option. Good land based spots to take the kids to are Coomera, Paradise Point, Hope Island, Marine Stadium, Runaway Bay, Grand Hotel Jetty and Nerang River parks.

Plenty of solid Mangrove Jack were caught and released in last weekend’s MJA fishing comp by local anglers in the Coomera River on lures and baits. The Coomera River is holding plenty of bait schools at the moment which is good news for anglers chasing Jacks, Trevally and Cod to name a few species on offer. Fishing jetties, pontoons, bridges, rock walls and snags will be the best places to encounter a Jack or other species. Casting lures like Zerek tango shad 69mm, Zman 3’ or 4’ minnows are a popular choice, 30lb trace will be a good starting point to avoid getting busted off although you may have to upgrade to 40lb around heavy structure. Live baits like herring, mullet and pike or mullet filet will also work a treat.
Andrew scored a nice Jew Fish on his Houseboat holiday using a live herring in the Never Fails fishing at night. Customers have been catching good Jew in the Gold Coast Seaway, Pin Bar entrance, Tiger Mullet Channel and Canaipa Passage.
I’d recommend throwing the crab pots out while your fishing as we have seen some nice Mud and Sand Crabs caught this week.

At the time of writing my report the weather is looks like we are in for some moderate to strong Hot Northerly winds for the next week. We have plenty of good options to hide out of the wind to chase a fish on the Gold Coast. Just keep an eye out for Summer storms and be up to date with the current forecast.
