Loads of happy fishers on Gold Coast

With School Holidays in full swing, the Gold Coast Sports Fish Club’s Flathead Classic and the Queen’s Birthday Long weekend on the way, we have had lots of happy fishers and Houseboat customers enjoying the fishing on the Gold Coast.  We’ve had a bit of wind around this week but managed to find a few good fish on the chew.

The Gold Coast Sports Fish Club Flathead Classic is underway this week form Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th of September seeing hundreds of anglers trying their luck this year with mixed weather conditions on the forecast to test the best teams and anglers.  Flathead have been around in good numbers for the past few months and I’m sure all the teams have worked out which areas are producing and when. If you’re not fishing the comp and are keen to chase a Flathead try the Coomera River, Gold Coast Seaway, Currigee, Crab Island, Brown Island, Aldershots, Tipplers Passage, Dux, Bedrooms, Pin Bar, Kalinga Bank and Tiger Mullet Channel have all been fishing well.  Drifting WA Pilchards, White Pilchards and Yabbies work well if you prefer to use bait.  For the lure fisho’s try mixing up Soft Plastics, Soft Vibes and Metal Blades all work well, jig head weight or lure weight will depend on the depth of water a tide flow in the area you are fishing.  Good luck to Scott, Rob and Kord from team Wilson Fishing and Daniel from team Bush N Beach Fishing Magazine hope you find plenty of big lizards.

I was lucky enough to take advantage of a small weather window early in the week and sneak offshore for a look with my mate Wayne and my daughter Bec. The northerly wind had been blowing hard the day before but dropped off early hours and the SE change was due mid-morning so we decided to give it a go.  We fished the 18 fathom reef east of the Seaway not wanting to head out too far, we found plenty of bait and fish on the sounder which was a good sign.  After a bit of burley was deployed in the area we started to get a bit of action with a few small Pearl Perch and Squire starting to show up. We ended up with a feed of Squire and a 65cm Snapper and a nice tasty Moses Perch. We also found Mac Tuna, a Wobbegong Shark which was released unharmed and got blasted by a few sea monsters. We used a mixture of whole WA pilchards, Large Squid, Mullet Fillet and live Yakkas. The Snapper also to took a liking to a 7” soft plastic bouncing up and down in the rod holder up on the bow.

Our Houseboat customers have managed to get the kids onto some nice Bream, Flathead and Whiting during the week, it’s great to see the kids enjoying some time on the water getting back to basics during School Holidays. Some good spots are Tiger Mullet Channel, Jacobs Well, Bedrooms, Curtis, Dux, Tipplers Passage, Coomera River, Paradise Point and Wave Break Island.  We have had some customers dropping into the shop that have been catching a few fish land based in the Coomera River, Paradise Point, Esplanade at Runaway Bay, Labrador and Marine Stadium. Prawns, Worms and Yabbies will all work well. It’s great to see the kids also trying their luck at throwing a few soft plastics around, sometimes a bit of extra patience is required but well worth the effort if you hook a good fish you just never know what might hit your lure.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.
