Gold Coast Flathead Classic 2016

THE Great Northern Brewing Co Gold Coast Flathead Classic has a proud 23-year history and this premier fishing event continues to go from strength to strength each year.

Last year saw the biggest event yet, attracting about 551 anglers and their families to the fabulous Gold Coast. Historically, the tournament’s results have provided valuable flathead catch and growth rate data used for long-term management of the species in Queensland.

For 2016, event registration will take place on Wednesday, September 28, with fishing from Thursday, September 29 to Saturday, October 1. These dates coincide with both Queensland and NSW school holidays and a public holiday weekend, resulting in the opportunity for a great family outing.

This is also prime flathead season, with big fish always an attraction.

Anglers travel from as far away as Darwin and Tasmania to take part, with numerous anglers returning year after year and making this event part of their annual calendar. The eco-friendly catch and release format minimises the impact on the local fishery, ensuring plenty of flathead are on offer in years to come.

Back in 1994, the concept of catch and release was new to anglers and the Gold Coast Sportfishing Club’s Flathead Classic pioneered the tournament format now popular with fishing tournaments throughout Australia.

All major prizes are awarded on a random lucky draw basis, with this year’s top prize a Quintrex 460 Renegade Side Console valued at $30,000 and supplied by Surf Coast Marine. More than $200,000 in prizes will be given away to lucky competitors over the tournament’s duration, meaning you don’t have to be the world’s best angler to score incredible prizes.

Evening meals, a tournament team bag and tournament shirt are included for all competitors. Run from the Northern Pavilion of the Broadwater Parklands, Southport, a nearby dedicated four-lane boat ramp and pontoon means access to the water is made quick and easy.

Daily fun comps, entertainment and trade stands will keep the whole family entertained. This tournament is much more than a fishing comp –  it is now a feature event with an excellent random prize pool, giveaways, entertainment and much more.
