Extreme rain affects Gold Coast fishing

We are all happy to see the end of “Debbie” here on the Gold Coast, a lot of rain in a short time frame certainly affected the local area and impacted on the community in a lot of different ways.  We were lucky here on the Coomera River that the system handled the extra over flow at the weir fairly well and by Friday afternoon we were tidal again and getting back to normal.  Let’s see how the fishing has been this week.

I spent some time at the Coomera River weir over the weekend helping my daughter who had spotted a lot of the native fish species trying to make their way back into the fresh water lake above   the overflowing river.  Bec managed to relocate hundreds of native species like Bass, Gudgeon, Perch and Mullet back into the fresh water.  Bec even made the local 7 news, they filmed her in action and a small interview which was great to see.

Houseboat customers have made the most of the fresh water flush out this week scoring plenty of nice Mud Crabs and enjoying a tasty feed.  Some good spots to set the pots are The Never Fails Islands, Tipplers Passage, Brown Island, The Coomera River, Pimpama River, Jacobs Well, Tiger Mullet Channel, Canaipa Passage and the Logan River.  Whole mullet has been the bait of choice.

With School Holidays underway and the weather looking better now is a good time to get the kids out of the house and go fishing.  The idea is to keep it simple and get the kids involved as much as possible.

You don’t need expensive rods and reels, a basic cheap kid’s combo we stock here at Coomera Bait & Tackle will work fine.  It does not matter how big or small the fish is they catch it’s all about fun.  Bream, Whiting and Flathead can be caught from the shore or in a boat.  Some good land based spots to try are Paradise Point, Runaway Bay, Hope Island, Coomera River Bridge, Marine Stadium, Grand Hotel Jetty, Jacobs Well, Labrador and Nerang River.  A packet of Prawns, White Pilchards, Worms or Yabbies will work well.

The Gold Coast waterways are slowly cleaning up day by day and the fishing is getting better also. Bream have been plentiful in most areas especially the canals they just seem to fire up with the flush out. Whiting are also being caught in reasonable numbers towards the end of the week, if you can find a bit of tidal flow hopefully you will find a Whiting, worms or yabbies will work best.

If the rain holds off and the wind eases by next week we will see plenty of fishing options.
