Coomera Houseboats customers hooking good size whiting

Not much difference from this week to last week as again the strong Southerly winds have been persistent on the Gold Coast and the extra big swell is pushing more water in through the ocean entrances making the tides larger than normal.  Let’s have a look at what’s been biting.

A drop in the wind and swell last weekend gave anglers a chance to sneak offshore to take advantage of the clean water pushed in by the southerly winds last week and have a look for a Mackerel or two.

Customers reported both Spanish and Spottie Mackerel being caught around the bait reef off the Seaway, 12 , 18, and 24 fathoms east of the Seaway and also South on Mermaid, Palm Beach and the Gravel Patch.  A mixture of trolling diving lures, skirted lures, throwing metal slugs, live baits on the surface and down rigger will work depending on what depth the fish are feeding at.  For Spottie’s you can anchor up on the bait start a good burley trail and float half pillie’s and also throw metal slugs to attract the fish.

Given the current weather forecast it maybe Sunday or Monday before the conditions offshore are good enough to venture but after the wind the water should be looking great for pelagic species.

Our Houseboat customers have been finding a few good feeds of Bream, Whiting and Flathead hiding out from the wind this week. Some good spots to try in a South Easterly wind are the Coomera River North Arm, Tipplers Passage, Dux, Whalley’s Gutter, Tiger Mullet Channel, North side of Crusoe Island, Oak Passage and Koureyabba. Prawns, Worms, Yabbies, White Pilchard’s and Mullet fillet will give you a good shot at catching most species.

The Prawns have been a bit quiet while the wind is up but both Sand Crabs and Mud Crabs are still being caught.

At the time of writing my report we will see the strong Southerly  winds persist until Sunday or Monday before easing and tending  moderate N/NE early in the week.
